Think About What You Want to Say

When you give a speech, a large part of the anxiety comes from not feeling prepared for what you want to say. Likewise, you can help ease your fears about telling your parents the news by preparing what you want to say beforehand.

When thinking about what you want to say, these questions can help you get started:

  • What details do I want to include? (For example, do I want to tell them who the father is? Are we planning on staying together, etc.?)
  • Do I know what pregnancy choice I want to make? (Your options are parenting, adoption, or abortion, and knowing which option you’re leaning toward will be important when you tell your parents the news about your pregnancy.)

Thinking through these questions will help you feel more prepared to approach your parents.

Decide When and Where to Tell Them

Telling your parents in a place where you feel most comfortable will help you have more confidence in the moment. When considering where to tell them, you might want to think about:

  • Would I rather tell them in public or private? (For example, would you feel more comfortable at a restaurant or your home?)
  • Am I worried about my safety when telling them? If so, bringing a support person (friend, relative, etc.) will help ensure your safety.

When thinking about when to tell them, you’ll want to make sure that your parents can give you their undivided attention. If weekdays are super busy, you might consider telling them on a weekend instead.
